
The Government recently announced incentives that could make installing small scale renewable energy methods a much more attractive proposition. In future those generating their own energy and heat will receive payment for every unit they produce themselves rather than using conventional sources.
The ‘Feed in Tariff' (FIT) will commence in April 2010 and relates to generating energy, with the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI), covering methods such as biomass (wood pellet) boilers and ground source heat pumps, following a year later. With OFGEM predicting the likelihood of a 14-25% rise in energy bills by 2020 the attraction of generating your own should increase. Read more.
The consumer advice website, Which?, offered a cautious welcome in their article: Cash for renewable energy scheme launched. The greatest opportunity for tourism businesses is anticipated to be from the RHI - particularly in relation to solar thermal water where the peak summer demand would coincide with the best conditions for generation and technology is more affordable.
